Some pro level guitarists prefer Epiphone pickups, so it comes down to sound preference. ProBuckers have more warmth, whereas Burstbuckers have a little more bite. These pickups sound a little different, so it comes down to taste. The Chinese Epi SG has plastic inlays in the neck, but the body and neck wood (mahogany) is very lively and the tone and sustain is very good. I honestly dont find a lot of difference in quality. Gibson frequently use Burstbuckers whereas Epiphone use Probuckers. I now own a 2007 Chinese Epiphone SG, a 90s Korean-made Samick SG and a 2004 US made Gibson Les Paul Special. This doesn’t affect the sound negatively at all, and looks super cool. You still have the lush Maple top on the Les Paul, it’s just got a sheet over it to make it look a bit nicer. To help cut down costs, Epiphone will often use a Veneer top, which means your wood grain is kind of printed on or uses a very thin piece of wood.
